Space Maintainer

Posted by Jospeh Bal May 14, 2023

Space maintainers are used to help hold the space that will eventually by occupied by teeth. These spaces are important, and if they are not maintained, the teeth can shift into the wrong positions. This can cause bite issues and lead to alignment issues.

What is a space maintainer?

A space maintainer is a type of oral appliance that is used to keep a space open so that a permanent tooth can erupt in that space. If a tooth is lost too soon, it could cause nearby teeth to shift into the empty space and make it difficult for the permanent tooth to erupt in its proper spot. However, with a space maintainer, the neighboring teeth are unable to shift into that space and your child’s permanent tooth will be able to erupt when the time comes.

If your child loses a baby tooth too early, then a space maintainer may be necessary to prevent the other teeth from shifting into that space. This can prevent other orthodontic issues in the future.

Before deciding on using a space maintainer, your dentist will assess the situation and determine the best treatment option for your child.

What are benefits of using a space maintainer?

A bridge, denture or dental implant may be recommended as a permanent solution for missing teeth. However, if a child is missing a tooth in the front of their mouth, a space maintainer can keep the empty space open until the adult tooth is ready to come in. The space maintainer will prevent teeth from shifting out of place and causing misalignment of the permanent teeth. This will also allow the adult tooth to grow in correctly without crowding the other teeth around it. If a baby tooth is lost too soon, then the space maintainer will keep it from blocking the adult tooth.

There are different types of space maintainers. A band and loop are the most common. This is a stainless steel wire that loops around the two teeth. It is then cemented into place by your dentist. Another option is a space maintainer that is similar to a retainer. The dentist will bond an acrylic piece to your child’s teeth and attach metal wires to keep the space open. This will stay in place until their adult incisors grow in. Then the dentist will remove it. There are also removable appliances such as plates or partial dentures. These are also removed once the child’s adult teeth grow in.

It’s important to talk to a dentist if your child has a missing tooth that needs to be replaced. They will determine the best treatment option for your child and let you know if it includes a space maintainer. Using one will allow your child to keep their smile looking and feeling healthy. It will also prevent further complications with the eruption of their adult teeth.
